What it means
تصور (tasavvor) means imagination, mental conception, or the act of forming a mental picture of something. It is an Arabic loanword from the Form V verbal noun (masdar) of the root ص-و-ر (s-w-r), which relates to form, image, and picture, the same root that gives Arabic صورة (sura, face or image). In Persian it is used both as a noun meaning imagination or mental image and as a verb in the construction تصور کردن (tasavvor kardan), meaning to imagine or to conceive of. It differs from خیال (khiyâl) in being more cognitive and concrete: تصور implies forming a specific mental image or understanding of something, while خیال leans toward fancy, daydream, or vague imagining.
How to use it
- تصور کن که تو اون جا بودی. (tasavvor kon ke to unja budi.) “Imagine that you were there.”
- تصورم از این شغل اشتباه بود. (tasavvoram az in shoghl eshtebâh bud.) “My conception of this job was wrong.”
- از قدرت تصور بچهها شگفتزده شدم. (az qodrat-e tasavvor-e bache-hâ shegeft-zade shodam.) “I was amazed by the children’s imaginative power.”
- این رو نمیتونم تصور کنم. (in ro nemi-tunam tasavvor konam.) “I can’t imagine this.”
Cultural note
تصور and its verb تصور کردن appear throughout classical Persian philosophical writing, particularly in works influenced by Islamic Neoplatonism, where the capacity to form mental images was analyzed as a distinct faculty of the rational soul. In modern Persian, the word is standard and neutral, used equally in academic writing and everyday speech. Persian speakers frequently use تصور کردن where English speakers would say “imagine” as a rhetorical device in storytelling, as in تصور کن which functions like the English “imagine” or “picture this.”
