What it means

ستون (sotun) means a column, pillar, or upright structural support. This is a native Persian word going back to Middle Persian, where the same form referred to the load-bearing pillars of palaces and fire temples. In everyday speech it covers anything that stands vertically to hold weight, from the concrete pillars of a modern apartment block to the wooden posts of a traditional veranda. A close synonym is پایه (paye), which leans more toward “base” or “leg,” while sotun emphasizes the full upright shaft.

How to use it

  • ستون‌های خونه ترک برداشتن. (sotun-haye khune tarak bardashtan.) “The columns of the house have cracked.”
  • اون ستون رو نزن، باربره. (oon sotun ro nazan, bâr-bare.) “Don’t knock that pillar, it’s load-bearing.”
  • پشتم به یه ستون سرد بود. (poshtam be ye sotun sard bud.) “My back was against a cold column.”
  • ستون وسط حیاط قدیمیه. (sotun-e vasat-e heyat qadimie.) “The pillar in the middle of the courtyard is old.”

Cultural note

The Chehel Sotoun pavilion in Isfahan, whose name means “Forty Columns,” is one of the most celebrated examples of this word in Persian cultural memory. The building actually has twenty columns, but their reflection in the pool in front doubles them to forty in the popular imagination. The word sotun also carries a metaphorical sense in classical poetry, where a brave or steadfast person is called a sotun, a pillar of support for others.
