What it means

پرینتر (printer) is an English loanword adopted directly into Persian. It refers to a printing device connected to a computer. In everyday conversation, nearly all Iranians use پرینتر rather than the formal Persian equivalent چاپگر (chapgar). The loanword has displaced the native term almost entirely in casual and technical speech alike.

How to use it

  • پرینتر خراب شده، نمی‌تونم چیزی چاپ کنم. (Printer kharab shode, nemitonam chizi chap konam.) “The printer is broken, I can’t print anything.”
  • کاغذ پرینتر تموم شده. (Kaghaz-e printer tamum shode.) “The printer paper has run out.”
  • باید این فرم رو پرینت بگیرم. (Bayad in form ro print begiram.) “I need to print out this form.”
  • پرینتر رنگی داری؟ (Printer rangi dari?) “Do you have a colour printer?”

Cultural note

In Iran, the act of printing is almost always called “print gereftam” (I got a print), blending the English noun “print” with the Persian verb گرفتن. This pattern of combining an English word with a Persian verb is very common in everyday spoken Farsi. The Academy of Persian Language and Literature recommends چاپگر as the official equivalent, and that form does appear in formal writing and government contexts, but پرینتر dominates everywhere else.
