What it means
پیشخدمت (pishkhedmat) means waiter or server, literally “one who stands before in service.” The word compounds پیش (pish), a native Persian element meaning “before” or “in front,” with خدمت (khedmat), which comes from Arabic خِدْمَة (khidma) meaning “service.” This makes پیشخدمت a mixed-origin compound. In practice, many Iranians use گارسون (gârson), borrowed from French “garcon,” or simply address a waiter as آقا (âqâ, sir) or خانم (khânom, ma’am). پیشخدمت carries a more formal or written register and appears more often in menus, signs, and formal speech.

Cultural note
In everyday speech in Iran, گارسون (gârson) is the most common informal word for a waiter, particularly in urban cafes and casual restaurants. Addressing the waiter directly as آقا or خانم is also very common and considered perfectly polite. پیشخدمت sounds more formal and is more likely to appear in writing or in upscale settings. The Academy of Persian Language and Literature has promoted پیشخدمت as the preferred Persian equivalent over the French borrowing گارسون, though colloquial usage still favors گارسون.
