What it means
نیمسال (nimsâl) means “semester” or “half-year academic term.” It is a compound of two fully native Persian words: “nim” (نیم, half) and “sâl” (سال, year), making this one of the relatively rare academic terms in Persian that has no Arabic or foreign root. In formal university writing and official documents, nimsâl is preferred over the colloquial “tarm” (ترم, from the English “term”). The two main terms of the Iranian academic year are nimsâl-e avval (first semester, roughly October to February) and nimsâl-e dovvom (second semester, roughly February to June).
How to use it
- نیمسال اول امتحاناش سختتره. (nimsâl-e avval emtehânâsh sakht-tare.) “The exams in the first semester are harder.”
- این نیمسال چند تا درس داری؟ (in nimsâl chand tâ dars dâri?) “How many courses do you have this semester?”
- نتایج نیمسال دوم اومد. (natâyej-e nimsâl-e dovvom umad.) “The second-semester results came out.”
- نیمسال تابستانی واحد میدن؟ (nimsâl-e tâbestâni vâhed midand?) “Do they offer credit units in the summer semester?”
Cultural note
Iranian universities officially divide the academic year into two main semesters, with an optional shorter summer term. The semester system replaced older trimester arrangements at most institutions during reforms of the 1980s and 1990s. In casual speech, students almost universally say “tarm” (ترم) rather than nimsâl, so hearing the full formal word usually signals a university document, a professor’s formal announcement, or an administrative form.
