What it means

کولر (kuler) means “cooler” or “air cooler,” the machine that cools a room in summer. It is a loanword from English “cooler.” On its own, کولر almost always points to the evaporative or swamp cooler, the boxy water-fed unit on Iranian rooftops, which is also called کولر آبی (kuler-e âbi) to be specific. The air-conditioning unit is a separate thing: کولر گازی (kuler-e gâzi). So when an Iranian says just “کولر,” picture the water cooler, not the AC.

How to use it

  • کولر رو روشن کن (kuler ro roshan kon) “turn on the cooler”
  • کولرتون آبیه یا گازی؟ (kuler-etun âbi-ye yâ gâzi?) “is your cooler an evaporative one or AC?”
  • کولر خرابه، باد نمیده (kuler kharâb-e, bâd nemide) “the cooler is broken, it is not blowing air”
  • تو این گرما بدون کولر نمیشه (tu in garmâ bedun-e kuler nemishe) “in this heat you can’t manage without a cooler”

Cultural note

The کولر آبی is the classic summer machine in much of Iran, especially in hot, dry cities, where its water-pad cooling works well. Families clean it and swap the straw or cellulose pads each spring before the heat arrives, and its steady hum is a familiar summer sound. In humid areas near the Caspian, the کولر گازی is more practical, since an evaporative cooler does little in damp air.
