What it means

کارتون (kârtun) has two distinct meanings in everyday Persian. The first and more general meaning is cartoon or animated film, covering both children’s animated series and satirical or editorial cartoons. The word entered Persian from European languages, ultimately tracing back to Italian cartone (large paper or cardboard) via French carton and then into the sense of a sketch or animated film. The second meaning, very common in practical speech, is cardboard box, the kind used for moving house or packaging goods. Context almost always makes the meaning clear: a child saying «کارتون می‌بینم» (kârtun mibinam, I’m watching cartoons) and a mover saying «چند تا کارتون لازم دارم» (chand tâ kârtun lâzem dâram, I need a few cardboard boxes) use the same word. The adjective کارتونی (kârtuni) means cartoonish or animated.

How to use it

• بچه‌ها دارن کارتون می‌بینن (bachehâ dâran kârtun mibinan) “The kids are watching cartoons.”
• وسایلم رو تو کارتون گذاشتم (vasâyel-am ro to kârtun gozâshtam) “I put my stuff in a cardboard box.”
• کارتون بامزه‌ای بود (kârtun-e bâmozze-i bud) “It was a funny cartoon.”
• این کارتونیه، واقعی نیست (in kârtunie, vâghe’i nist) “This is cartoonish, it’s not real.”

Cultural note

Iranian state television has produced animated series since the 1980s, many of which became beloved childhood staples for multiple generations. International cartoons such as Tom and Jerry (تام و جری), Doraemon, and Disney productions are widely watched and referred to by name, with کارتون as the umbrella term. The dual meaning of کارتون (animated film versus cardboard box) is so natural to Persian speakers that it rarely causes confusion, though it is a reliable source of gentle amusement for Iranians teaching Farsi to foreigners.
