What it means
هندوانه (hendevâne) means “watermelon” in Persian. The word is native to Persian and is built on “Hend” or “Hind,” the classical Persian name for India, reflecting the belief that the fruit came from that direction. It is used across all registers and age groups, with no meaningful synonym in everyday speech, though some dialects say خربزه (kharbozeh) for the broader melon family. Watermelon and its cousin خربزه are the two defining summer melons of Iranian cuisine.

In summer, roadside vendors selling whole watermelons stacked in pyramids are a familiar sight across Iranian cities and highways.
