What it means
قبلاً (qablan) means “previously,” “before,” or “in the past.” It derives from the Arabic noun قبل (qabl, “before,” “prior”), combined with the Arabic adverbial accusative suffix ـاً. In Persian it refers to an unspecified time before now, ranging from moments ago to years past depending on context. It pairs naturally as an opposite to اخیراً (akhiran, “recently”): قبلاً نمیدونستم، اخیراً یاد گرفتم (“I didn’t know before, I learned recently”). A synonym in more formal prose is پیش از این (pish az in, “before this”).
How to use it
- قبلاً اینجا یه کافه بود. (qablan injâ ye kâfe bud.) “There used to be a cafe here.”
- قبلاً فارسی بلد نبودم. (qablan fârsi balad nabudam.) “I did not know Persian before.”
- قبلاً گفتم بهت. (qablan goftam behet.) “I told you previously.”
- قبلاً اینقدر شلوغ نبود. (qablan inghad sholugh nabud.) “It was not this busy before.”

قبلاً is one of the most versatile time adverbs in everyday Persian, used to recall past states, habits, and conditions. Iranians often use it with a nostalgic or corrective tone: قبلاً بهتر بود (qablan behtar bud, “it used to be better”) is a common social observation about change. Its Arabic origin is shared by many of the most common Persian temporal adverbs, reflecting centuries of Arabic influence on the Persian literary and administrative vocabulary.
