What it means

فتوسنتز (foto-sentez) entered Persian from French scientific terminology (فرانسوی), ultimately tracing to the Greek words for light (photos) and putting together (synthesis). It names the biological process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and release oxygen. The word has no native Persian equivalent because the concept entered Persian education through modern science, so فتوسنتز is the only term used, from primary school textbooks to university biology.

How to use it

  • گیاهان از طریق فتوسنتز انرژی تولید می‌کنند. (Giyâhân az tariq-e foto-sentez enerži towlid mi-konand.) “Plants produce energy through photosynthesis.”
  • فتوسنتز در کلروپلاست‌های برگ انجام می‌شود. (Foto-sentez dar kloroplâst-hâ-ye barg anjâm mi-shavad.) “Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of leaves.”
  • بدون فتوسنتز اکسیژن جوی کاهش می‌یابد. (Bedun-e foto-sentez oksizhan-e javvi kâhesh mi-yâbad.) “Without photosynthesis, atmospheric oxygen would decline.”
  • معلم فتوسنتز را با یک نمودار ساده توضیح داد. (Mo’allem foto-sentez râ bâ yek namudâr-e sâde towzih dâd.) “The teacher explained photosynthesis with a simple diagram.”

Cultural note

Iran’s national school curriculum introduces فتوسنتز in the fourth grade, making it one of the first scientific loanwords Iranian children learn. Because the word is entirely borrowed and sounds distinctly foreign, some science educators in Iran have proposed replacing it with a Persian coinage such as نورساخت (nur-sâkht, light-building), but فتوسنتز remains the dominant and official term in textbooks. The process is central to Iranian agricultural science, where understanding water and sunlight efficiency in crops is an active research area.
