What it means
امضا کردن (emzâ kardan) means to sign, as in putting your signature on a document. The noun امضا (emzâ) is borrowed from Arabic imda’ (to ratify or confirm in writing), and it is joined to the light Persian verb کردن (kardan, to do) to form the compound verb. This pattern, Arabic noun plus Persian کردن, is one of the most productive structures in modern Persian. امضا on its own can also refer to the signature itself: “emzâ-t kojâst?” means “Where is your signature?” A close synonym for the action is mohr zadan (to stamp), though that refers to an official seal rather than a handwritten name.
How to use it
- لطفا اینجا امضا کن. (lotfan injâ emzâ kon.) “Please sign here.”
- قرارداد رو امضا کردم. (qarârdâd ro emzâ kardam.) “I signed the contract.”
- رئیس جمهور توافقنامه رو امضا کرد. (ra’is jomhur tavâfoqnâme ro emzâ kard.) “The president signed the agreement.”
- هنوز امضا نکردم، میخوام دوباره بخونمش. (hanuz emzâ nakardam, mikhâm dobâre bekhoonamesh.) “I haven’t signed yet, I want to read it again.”
Cultural note
In Iranian administrative and legal culture, امضا (the signature) carries formal legal weight, but so does the mohr (official stamp), and many institutions still require both. At a government office (edareh), you will often be asked to امضا کردن and mohr zadan on the same document. International agreements signed by Iranian officials, especially in the context of nuclear negotiations or trade deals, are routinely described in Iranian media using this verb.
