What it means

بدمینتون (badminton) is the Persian rendering of the English word badminton, the racket sport played with a shuttlecock over a net. Persian borrowed the word directly from English with minimal phonetic adjustment, as it does with most modern sports terminology that arrived in Iran during the twentieth century. The English name comes from Badminton House, the Duke of Beaufort’s estate in Gloucestershire, England, where British officers returning from India popularized the game in the 1870s.

How to use it

  • بدمینتون بازی کردی تا حالا؟ (badminton bâzi kardi tâ halâ?) “Have you ever played badminton?”
  • راکت بدمینتونم کجاست؟ (râkat-e badmintonam kojâst?) “Where is my badminton racket?”
  • توی حیاط بدمینتون بازی کنیم؟ (tuye hayât badminton bâzi konim?) “Shall we play badminton in the yard?”
  • تیم بدمینتون مدرسه دنبال بازیکن می‌گرده. (tim-e badminton-e madrase donbâl-e bâzikon migarde.) “The school badminton team is looking for players.”

Cultural note

Badminton was introduced to Iran in the mid-twentieth century along with other Western sports. The Badminton Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran oversees national competitions and international representation. The sport is played both competitively and recreationally, and it is particularly popular as a casual backyard or park game among families and young people. Iran has competed in international badminton events under the BWF.
