What it means
آتشنشان (âtash-neshân) is the everyday Persian word for a firefighter. It is a compound of two pure Persian elements: آتش (âtash, meaning fire) and نشان (neshân), the present stem of the verb نشاندن (neshândan). That verb is a causative of نشستن (neshestan, to sit) and carries the sense of to place, to settle, or to put out, so آتشنشان literally means one who puts out fire. It is gender-neutral in everyday speech and used in both formal and informal contexts. A close institutional synonym is آتشنشانی (âtash-neshâni), which refers to the fire department as an institution rather than the individual officer.

The profession carries strong public respect, and Iranian media regularly features human-interest stories about firefighters. The Plasco building collapse in Tehran in January 2017, which killed sixteen firefighters, became a defining moment of national mourning for the service.
