What it means
زاویه (zâviye) means an angle in the geometric sense, such as the 90-degree angle of a right triangle, but Iranians also use it for the corner of a physical space and, very commonly, for a point of view or perspective in discussion. The word comes directly from Arabic زاوية (zâwiya), which carries the same range of meanings. A close synonym in the figurative sense is دیدگاه (didgâh), meaning viewpoint, though زاویه feels slightly more spatial and concrete. In mathematics class you will hear زاویه constantly, and in everyday debate you will hear phrases like از این زاویه, meaning from this angle or from this perspective.
How to use it
- زاویه این مثلث نود درجهست. (Zâviye-ye in mosal-las navad daraje-st.) “The angle of this triangle is ninety degrees.”
- از زاویه دیگهای بهش نگاه کن. (Az zâviye-ye digeh-i behesh negâh kon.) “Look at it from a different angle.”
- دوربین رو از یه زاویه بهتر بذار. (Durbin ro az ye zâviye behtar bezâr.) “Set the camera at a better angle.”
- از زاویه اون، حق داره. (Az zâviye-ye oon, hagh dâre.) “From his perspective, he is right.”
Cultural note
The word زاویه entered Persian through the long history of Arabic as the language of Islamic scholarship, science, and mathematics. Medieval Persian mathematicians writing in Arabic used زاوية extensively, and the term passed seamlessly into Persian scientific and everyday vocabulary. In Persian literary and philosophical writing, زاویه often carries the metaphorical weight of a perspective or lens, and the phrase تغییر زاویه, meaning shift of perspective, appears regularly in contemporary journalism and social commentary.
