What it means
نشستن (neshestan) means to sit or to sit down. It is a pure Persian verb inherited from Old Iranian, and its present stem is نشین (neshin). You will hear it dozens of times a day in natural conversation. The imperative بشین (beshin) is the casual colloquial form meaning sit down, while بنشینید (benshinid) is the polite plural form. A close related verb is نشاندن (neshandan), which means to make someone sit, the causative form.
How to use it
- بشین راحت باش. (Beshin rahat bash.) “Sit down and make yourself comfortable.”
- کجا بشینم؟ (Koja beshinam?) “Where should I sit?”
- ساعتها پشت میز نشست. (Saat-ha posht-e miz neshast.) “He sat at the desk for hours.”
- بنشینید لطفاً. (Benshinid lotfan.) “Please have a seat.”
Cultural note
In Iranian hospitality, asking a guest to بفرمایید بنشینید (befarmayid benshinid), please do sit, is one of the first acts of welcome upon entering a home. The verb neshestan also appears in compound expressions like نشست و برخاست (neshast o barkhast), meaning social interaction or meetings, literally sitting and rising. Floor seating on a korsi or carpet remains common in many Iranian households, giving neshestan a domestic intimacy that chair-based cultures may not fully capture.
