What it means
لولهکش (lule-kesh) means plumber: the tradesperson who works with pipes for water supply, drainage, and gas lines. The word is a native Persian compound: لوله (lule) means pipe or tube, and کش is the Persian agent suffix from کشیدن (to pull, to draw, to run), used here in the sense of one who runs or lays pipes. Both elements are Persian, making this one of the genuinely native compounds in the construction trades vocabulary. A close synonym is تأسیساتی (tâsisâti), which covers plumbing and mechanical systems more broadly, but لولهکش is the word people actually say when they need someone to fix the pipes.
How to use it
- لولهکش گفت لوله آب ترکیده. (lule-kesh goft lule-ye âb tarkide.) “The plumber said the water pipe has burst.”
- باید زنگ بزنیم به لولهکش. (bâyad zang bezanim be lule-kesh.) “We need to call the plumber.”
- لولهکش داره لولههای گاز رو چک میکنه. (lule-kesh dâre lule-hâ-ye gâz ro chek mi-kone.) “The plumber is checking the gas pipes.”
- لولهکشی حموم خراب شده. (lule-keshi-ye hamum kharâb shode.) “The bathroom plumbing has broken down.”
Cultural note
In Iranian cities, gas piping is as important as water plumbing, and a qualified لولهکش is expected to handle both. Gas leaks are taken seriously, and residents often keep the number of a trusted لولهکش on hand. The verb لولهکشی کردن (to do plumbing work) is also commonly used when talking about installing pipes in a new building, making لولهکشی (plumbing as a system or trade) a natural extension of the base noun.
