What it means

کمانچه (kamânche) is a small, spiked bowed string instrument with a round resonating body. The name is pure Persian: کمان (kamân) means “bow” and چه (-che) is a Persian diminutive suffix, so کمانچه literally means “little bow” or “little bow instrument.” It is closely related to the rebab family and is sometimes contrasted with the violin (ویولن), which replaced it in some urban ensembles during the twentieth century but never displaced it in regional music.

How to use it

  • کمانچه یه ساز ایرانیه. (Kamânche ye sâz-e Irâni-ye.) “The kemancheh is an Iranian instrument.”
  • اون کمانچه می‌نوازه. (Un kamânche minavâze.) “She plays the kemancheh.”
  • صدای کمانچه آدمو غمگین می‌کنه. (Sedâ-ye kamânche âdamo qamgin mikone.) “The sound of the kemancheh makes you feel melancholy.”
  • کمانچه رو با آرشه می‌زنن. (Kamânche ro bâ ârshe mizanan.) “The kemancheh is played with a bow.”

Cultural note

The kemancheh is one of the most emblematic instruments of Persian classical music and is also widespread across Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Kurdistan under variant names. UNESCO inscribed the art of crafting and playing the kamancheh on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2017, recognizing both Iranian and Azerbaijani traditions. Master players such as Ali-Asghar Bahari are credited with expanding its technical range in the twentieth century.
