What it means
گربه وحشی (gorbe-ye vahshi) means wildcat or feral cat. It is a compound noun phrase. گربه (gorbe) is the pure Persian word for cat, while وحشی (vahshi) is borrowed from Arabic وحش (wahsh), meaning wild beast or wilderness. Together they describe any cat living outside human domestication, whether the native Asiatic wildcat (Felis lybica ornata) found in Iran’s mountains and steppes, or simply a stray that has gone feral. In everyday speech, گربه وحشی can refer to both the true wildcat species and any untamed domestic cat.

Cultural note
Iran is home to the Asiatic wildcat (Felis lybica ornata), found across arid and semi-arid zones from Khorasan to Kerman. Separate from this species, Iran’s cities have large populations of street and feral cats, a familiar sight in Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz. Attitudes toward these cats vary: religious traditions generally consider cats clean animals, and many Iranians leave food out for street cats. The line between a tolerated street cat and a truly وحشی (vahshi) cat is often a matter of how approachable the animal is.
