What it means
فریزر (ferezer) means a freezer, the compartment or appliance that keeps food frozen. The word is a direct borrowing from the English word “freezer” and is used identically in both Iranian Persian and Dari. There is no native Persian alternative in everyday speech. Speakers sometimes say سردخانه (sard-khâne) for a large commercial cold-storage facility, but for the domestic kitchen appliance, فریزر is the only word in common use.
How to use it
- گوشت رو بذار تو فریزر. (Gusht ro bezâr tu ferezer.) “Put the meat in the freezer.”
- فریزر پر شده، جا نداره. (Ferezer por shode, jâ nadâre.) “The freezer is full, there is no room.”
- مرغ از فریزر در آوردم که یخش وا بشه. (Morgh az ferezer dar âvordam ke yakhesh vâ beshe.) “I took the chicken out of the freezer to thaw.”
- برق رفت و همه چیز تو فریزر آب شد. (Bargh raft o hame chiz tu ferezer âb shod.) “The power went out and everything in the freezer melted.”
Cultural note
In many Iranian households, the freezer is a serious logistical asset. Families often bulk-buy meat at a good price, prepare large batches of herbs (sabzi) already washed and chopped, and freeze portions of homemade food like ash or ghormeh sabzi for busy weeks. The freezer also plays a social role: when a family member travels to another city or abroad, they leave labeled containers for the household. A well-stocked فریزر is a marker of domestic preparedness.
